Thanks to solipsistic NATION we have a new Live recording of The Orb at AB Brussels.  Check out the site, and the live show can be downloaded here.

The really cool thing about the concert list is it highlights the full touring group (not the Alex and Thomas Fehlmann tour).  Live drum. Live singer. Interesting a mainly ambient take on Little Fluffy Clouds is included here.. except when the group decides to take advantage of the live drums. A must have for any fan.

Have fun.

Yes, it is video from a cell phone – and the video/sound it’s that bad – but here is a different version of Little Fluffy Clouds…

Great news for fans of the Orb, a new album is in the works with David Gilmour (Pink Floyd fame):

In an interview with The List, Dr Alex Paterson said “I’ve just started work on an album with David Gilmour from Pink Floyd which I think every Orb and Pink Floyd fan will want to hear.”

Granted, the album is not expected any time soon but the very thought of the combo working together just sends thoughts of ambient genius racing through my mind.

Back in June The Orb announced the cancellation of the U.S. tour with no explanation. Fans were left wondering why. The reason, as it turns out, was due to the death of Andy Hughes. A producer, engineer and DJ, Hughes ended up working on tracks that never ended up being released to the public.

Here is one such track.

This was dug up by gel-sol, a former label mate of Andy Hughes when they were both associated with em:t records. The track does not have a name, nor is it know what this track was intended for. From what is know the production was unfinished but was in production back in 2005.

The track is very, very good. Sad to see it never had a release.

The two teamed up last in 2005 for “Okie Dokie it’s the Orb on Kompakt” with a minimalist ambient effort that surprised a number of fans.  Gone were the intricate blending of layered samples and long pulsating tracks The Orb was known for, replaced with minimalistic – almost eerie – dub and techno that took the project known as The Orb in a whole new direction.
With my headphones on, the room dark, and Baghdad Batteries playing on I CD player I’ve found that The Orb revisits that truly unique creative place that only Paterson and Felhmann seem to know of in order to produce both beautiful, as well as disjointed, minimalistic music.
I find the first four tracks to be simply some of the most relaxing and beautiful pieces of ambient I’ve experienced in years. The soundscapes and textures created by the duo simply awe inspiring – and most of it accomplished without any recognizable samples. I’m sure samples were stretched, editable and tweaked in order to add to the experience but the listener wouldn’t even know it.  The standing out of the first four tracks is “Chocolate Fingers”.  The entire set is almost… well… almost very Eno/Fripp esque.
Suddenly, starting with  track 5, Dolly Unit, things change…  the atmospheric feel of the previous tracks is still present; however, minimalistic techno / dubby beats are introduced to the album.  Not only that, the team adds a seemingly random and unpredictable pattern key changing to the songs. The method adds a slightly disturbing listening experience – one second you are lulled into a sense of what to expect, the next who knows what is coming.  This behavior and mix of minimalist beats makes tracks 5 through 8… well.. a distraction from the rest of the album.
Just as quickly the organized chaos was added to the album it disappears with track 9, Pebbles, and remains missing for the rest of the album.  We are once again treated to an atmospheric ambient experience that graced the first half of the album.
Putting Paterson and Felhmann into a studio produces some really unique, really adventurous work.  I have to say that, while I enjoy the album, I find tracks 5 to 8 misplaced.  It’s almost as if they belong on another album  All said and done, I cannot wait to see what the next outing between the duo can bring.

The long awaited, once delayed, new release from The Orb is days about two weeks away from release.  Titled after the archaeological find believed to be the 1st ever batteries, “Baghdad Batteries” sees Alex Paterson and Thomas Felhmann join efforts once again.

I now understand why The Orb had to call off their North American tour.

I’m sad to hear that long time Orb collaborator, DJ and producer, Andy Hughes, has passed away at the age of 44. No major details have been released, but it looks as if he had a short lived sickness that focused on his liver. A donation fund was established at King’s College Hospital.

A copy of his obit can be found at Synthtopia.

My thoughts are with Andy’s family and friends.

Way back, in the U.F. Orb days, Bobby Gillespie (Primal Scream) was supposed to sing on an Orb track.  That track was intended to be Assassin.  For some reason, however, that idea never became a reality. Apparently, The Orb and Bobby Gillespie ended up doing a track together…just not Assassin.

I give you “Sucker” by Maximum Bob.

Sucker is a track sung by Bobby Gillespie, produced and engineered by The Orb, and was only issued as a very limited edition white label but never was released by a major record company.  Frankly, I can understand why…

The track is…less than average.

Maybe it was only intended to be a demo that would be polished up, or just the guys messing about one day, but it’s really nothing impressive. I think this will only be on interest for a collector – someone who simply wants to have everything – but I will let you judge for yourself.

Give it a download here.

While I had not intended to go to the Chicago show, it is still sad to hear – the Orb has cancelled their U.S. tour:

Due to personal reasons, the upcoming tour for The Orb will be postponed. All within the camp are looking forward to making their long anticipated return to the US and plan to deliver nothing less than an experience their fans deserve. With a new album on the horizon, The Orb hope to provide newly rescheduled dates as soon as possible and are excited about what is to come.

I hope all is well with the group.

There was a time, way back when, hearing about an Orb show would have gotten me all hot and bothered.  I am still a HUGE fan of their work, but I fear nothing can live up to the lives shows of the past.  I recall seeing them play with Sun Electric years back… it was pure magic.

Well, The Orb is playing on a Wednesday evening (6/24) at a decent sized venue call the Bottom Lounge, but the place is more of a… um… hybrid club/bar/restaurant…  For example, when they played at the Metro or at The Riv the venue “fit”.  They places were dark, large enough for roughly 1000 people and seemed to be appropriate for the music.  Bottom Lounge seems more…  yuppie.

Don’t get me wrong, the place is really nice but I don’t know if it is the right location for the show. The cost isn’t an issue… or may it’s just that I am getting old, longing for the rave days of past…  who knows.
