The BPA / Brighton Port Authority “Toe Jam” remix contest!

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

The BPA / Brighton Port Authority (a.k.a Fatboy Slim) is running a remix contest of his first single “Toe Jam Featuring David Byrne”.  The contest winner will get a pair of Technics RP-DH1200 Headphones, Fatboy Slim’s catalog on vinyl and the chance to have your remix released as a digital EP.

Individual tracks for “Toe Jam” are available free for download on the contest site.  The tracks can be rearranged and reused in any way to form a remix of the song and then Norman Cook; Mr. Fatboy Slim, will choose the winners himself!

Check it out here on the contest site, and make sure you check out two of the concert sponsors - BIGSTEREO and Discobelle.

Just a reminder, the completed remixes must be received on or by January 1, 2009 and remember to check out the contest rules.

Have fun and get the word out!

Alabama 3 Single Release: Monday Don’t Mean Anything

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

I’m a bit surprised that Alabama 3 decided to release a 3rd single from “M.O.R.” album, but they have. The single is “Monday don’t mean anything” and is available as a 4 track download, or 3 track 12″, that has new remixes for fans.

I know what I will be getting today…

Also, from the “how I wish I was going to be in the UK this winter” section of my mind, Alabama 3 and the Utah Saints will be playing shows on December 4th and December 8th.

How sweet is that!

New Prodigy album, “Invaders Must Die”, out in March

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

It almost seems as if The Prodigy dropped off the face of the earth after they took the world by storm with “The Fat of the Land” back in 97 (Oh, god, it has been that long?!?) Yes, “Always Numbered, Never Outgunned” hit number one in the UK for a week but it failed to make a wave in the US market.

Well, they are back with their 5th studio album “Invaders Must Die” , due on March 2009. From what I have seen thus far, there is a lot of hype building around the release – especially since all original members are involved with the album.

I love the Prodigy, always have, even when most thought I was a nut for doing so back in the early 90s, but I will say this, I don’t see the live show appeal.

When I had the opportunity to whiteness them, no one opened for them and they came on stage over an hour and a half late and were total dicks. (Telling the crowd to fuck off on several occasions, saying they didn’t want pussies cheering for them). Maybe they were having a bad day… dunno.

Another aspect could be due to the venues they plan in the United States. I mean, playing to a stadium on 70,000 people in the UK versus a crowd of 1200 in a small club provides a totally different experience.

So, in honor of a new album I give you three classic Prodigy videos

THE classic - the song that got things moving for the Prodigy - Charly

Next up is truly a treat, the CGI video to One Love!

And we end the the most controversial video the Prodigy ever put out - Smack My Bitch Up

They knew how to push buttons with their work, all levels of their work… I can’t wait to see what comes next.

In a world of uber paranoid people and sue happy industry…

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

I want to know how John Mayer got away with stealing the classic “People Get Ready (Curtis Mayfield)”  and packaging it as “Waiting on the World to Change”.

Even though Curtis’ son, Kirk Mayfield, called out Mayer no pay off was made to the family (to the best of my knowledge) and record labels didn’t get involved with lawsuits…  I like Mayer, but I would really like to know.

Anyway, someone out there decided to do a mash-up of the two songs.   The result is very impressive.

Alabama 3 “Woke Up This Morning” acoustic

Friday, November 7th, 2008

While I knew this was written way before “The Sopranos” came along, I never knew the history behind it. Apparently, this is a song about a woman (need to find her name) who killer her abusive husband when she couldn’t take it any more…

Who knew!

Well, enjoy the video.

Alabama 3 “Up Above My Head” live and acoustic!

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

The acoustic version of this song is simply amazing.

Enjoy!

Utah Saints Something Good 08 Video

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

Ok, I wasn’t a fan of the “Something Good 08″ remixes… I now have a new appreciation for the Radio mix thanks to the video.

It’s cute, puts a smile on my face… what more could I ask for?

Well done boys!

Apparently the Utah Saints are still around

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

If you were a fan of electronic music in the early 90’s you’ll, without a doubt, remember the Utah Saints. The really “big” song they produced was called “Something Good”.  Actually, it was a track that was a lot of fun…

Well, turns out the Utah Saints are still around and back with a range of remixes for “Something Good 08” but I can’t say I was overly impressed.  The mixes really don’t stand out in the music landscape, the original (for me) was far superior.

Funny thing, back in 2003 when I found out that Underworld was going to issues 2003 mixes for “Born Slippy” I originally didn’t see why they did so… until after realizing the didn’t just remix the track, they rewote it.

While the 2003 version didn’t top the original, they offered a new take - a new song while preserving the spirit of the original version.  They were not trying to out do themselves, they were trying to offer an alternative.  One of the new mixes provided a fresh, slow, take on the song (Born Slippy Nuxx - Down Version) which provided a whole new experience.

In the end Underworld took a driving dance track and turned it into something beautiful.  The Utah Saints seemed to have taken a part of their back catalog and simply allowed other producers to resample/remix their work with no real purpose in mind.  What’s the point?

Johnny Cash Remixed - Alabama 3 “Leave that Junk Alone”

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

I’ve been a fan of Johnny Cash for some time, he had one of the best voices ever to be recorded (if you ask me).  There is a remix album coming out on 10/14/2008 with some big name producers (Snoop Dogg, Philip Steir, Alabama 3) giving their own take on some of Johnny’s classics…

There are two stand out tracks one this album - Alabama 3’s remix of Leave that Junk Alone and Pete Rock’s remix of Folsom Prison Blues.  Frankly, the album is worth buying simply for these two alone.  I admit it, I’m a large Alabama 3 fan but, truly, what they’ve done here is outstanding in ever sense of the word.

The promo site is currently online @ johnnycashremixed.com and the best part all tracks can be streamed via Windows Media.
