A Google Alert jump into my inbox just now for Little Britain USA, one of my favorite shows of the last 6 months. The alert linked to the story “As season ends, networks can learn from cable”, which I quickly clicked on, and was horrified to see the following:

HBO had a bigger hit-and-miss ratio with the superb animated series “The Life and Times of Tim,” and the woefully unfunny “Little Britain USA.”

Woefully unfunny?

Aside from two reoccurring characters on the show that I found to be unfunny, the rest was side splitting hilarious. Like “I was laughing so hard I was crying” funny. Now, to turn the tables, I found The Life and Times of Tim to be enjoyable but it lost steam by then end of the season.

Ok, let’s continue on:

…FX had an uncommon bomb of its own in “Testees”…

WHAT!?? A bomb?!?

I admit that the show did not bat 1000%, but a bomb it was not. The humor was crude, sometimes things were just plain creepy – which was part of the magic – but in no way was it a bomb.

HBO imported the comedy “Summer Heights High” from Australia and it was funnier than some of its originals.

Really? You are joking right?

After watching the imported version, I was annoyed. Fingernails on a chalkboard annoyed. Someone breaking wind on an elevator annoyed. Screaming kids running around breaking your fine china and crystal ware while the parents look on thinking its cute annoyed.

The imported version was just bad as compared to the original. HBO took a funny series and butchered it in the hopes of making a U.S. friendly version.

HBO’s one-note (and yes, that one note is pretty funny) “Eastbound & Down” split opinions on whether HBO’s programming was too inconsistent.

Well, at least we agree on Eastbound & Down.

All this makes me ask, what did I miss? Really. Is my sense of humor that warped that only equally warped programming is interesting to me but not to the rest of the world?

Apart from Little Britain USA, I haven’t heard of any of the other shows mentioned. And I haven’t seen LBUSA because I either don’t get the channel it’s on up here, or it wasn’t on up here at all. What I do know is that the original show is better than any anti-depressant I’ve ever taken and I could watch it over and over again, sides splitting each and every time.

On another note, I see they’ve cancelled the US version of Life on Mars. Thank God. The original UK version is BRILLIANT, so if you ever get a chance to watch it, I highly recommend it.

I’ve managed to catch a number of the original episodes as well and they are FUNNY as HELL. Actually, out of all the shows listed, LBUSA is – by far – the best. I can’t wait for season two.

Testees is from a guy (Kenny Hotz) out of Canada, I’m surprised it didn’t make it up there.

I’ve never watched the US version of Life on Mars, nor the UK, so I won’t be disappointed when I catch the original.

Life & Times of Tim was simple, quirky and simply put, GREAT!
Little Britain USA was amusing (I would agree that “woefully unfunny” is the wrong description for it altogether)
LOVE LOVE LOVE Testees! The bawdy humor, the loving nutball characters, and the insane situations really did it for me!
Summer Heights High was hit or miss. I thought it was cute initially.
EastBound and down was just way too lewd for me at first. I couldn’t stand it because I did’t see any point to the vulgarity and the main character annoyed the shit out of me cuz he was such a dirty loser DICK!, but I must admit, it developed a lot more heart as as the season went on and by the end I did enjoy it and kinda felt for his character.
Flight of the Concords – the first season was FAN-effing-TASTIC! However it was a bit lackluster this season, wouldn’t you say?

Personally, I think that HBO has GREAT original series shows, in general.

Actually, I agree with you on FOTC. This last season was… well, it seemed as if they were reaching for material, which left the show coming off as poorly written.

Better way to say it, the magic was gone.

Hey.. summer heights high is absolute gold.

I don’t know why HBO syndicated it seeing as the humour is based around typical aussie school culture but the comedy aspect of it is top notch.

Haven’t seen testees or little britain US so I can’t comment on comparisons but lets not knock great aussie comedy just because someone said it was better then something else :) .

@OzSoapbox

I LOVE the original summer heights high (the aussie version). The eps that HBO put our were more targeted to a US audience – they cut down on some culture specific things.

So, original = genius. HBO version = no so much.

OzSoapbox on April 16th, 2009 at 3:43 pm #

Oh. Did they remake it for the US or just air an edited version of the aussie series?

Editing the original series seems a bit pointless.

Van Santos on April 16th, 2009 at 4:58 pm #

Well, having watched the HBO series and then the original DVD series, it appears it was re-edited and some shots/scenes re filmed.

The re filming/editing killed the US version of the show for me. I’d watch the original anytime.

BTW, speaking of Aussies, I hear they are going to be filming “Green Lanter” down your way (tho I’m not sure where you are located) with rather large budget….

They shot/filmed both Batman films in Chicago, where I’m based, and the sets were right down the street from my office. It was cool to watch.

OzSoapbox on April 17th, 2009 at 6:09 pm #

Not that I know anything about the green lantern (how is a light fixture a name of a super hero?) but I looked it up and it’ll be filmed in Sydney.

No-name super hero movies tend to be a bit crappy anyway.

Van Santos on April 17th, 2009 at 8:27 pm #

The green lantern is a second tier super hero, that’s for sure. I know a lot of people who disagree with me…. but… yea… no, still a second tier super hero.

I’m not a comic book guy, but I had hopes for this movie based off of what I had originally heard.
