A few weeks back I posted a chart from dshort.com that compared the last four bear markets, well they’ve updated the chart to reflect the recent market activity.

You can click the image to get a clear view.

What does this information say thus far?  Well, the S & P crash of 2008 was larger than the DOW crash of 1929.  It look as if a short term bottom was established as the S & P is up more than 10% from it’s low, but is the selling and downward pressure over?  Looking at the VIX, it sure looks like things have really calmed down…

Frankly, I wouldn’t be throwing money into the market just yet.

Important to note: The 51% drop in the S & P does not mean we are in a Depression

Yes, but think about it. America had a competitive spirit and two World Wars. We started creating new industries that weren’t built only around money. America wanted to be the biggest, the best, and brightest; it was something to be an American. Now, we are selling out to the lowest bidder, mostly China. Take a look at just about every American companies’ strategy, and they focus on making money for their shareholders and CEO, not making the best product, a good life for their employees or society – that it is why GM and Ford is where they are — sure blame it on the Unions and Healthcare costs. I blame it on management who can’t see beyond their latest quarterly report. We have lost our ability to be competitive in the world let alone out own backyard (would you prefer a chevy or a toyota?). I would like to see how Uncle Sam is going to help to the corporate sector out of this one…

@John,

I agree with your line of thinking here. Most management has simply turned their attention to short term results, giving little attention to the long term strategy. Though, I would semi-defend for at this point.

In the context of this discussion, however, we should differentiate between stock market (as in Bear Market) and the Economy as they are not the same.

I do believe we are in for a long hard trip, and I don’t know what direction this is headed.
